Tofu or seal flipper pie?
February 4, 2010

Just how poorly we understand each other was painfully evident to me this week. The Minister of Fisheries was speaking in my hometown when an American protestor smashed her in the face with a tofu pie. It was to protest the Canadian seal hunt. On this blog and this week’s program I want to take you to the people who survive off those seals. People who want the human right to exist in the Arctic, to live off the animals of the land. God placed them there, gave them the seal, polar bear, caribou and whale to thrive on. Their existence can be fragile because of misunderstandings, misuse of the world’s energy resources, and, like all of us, risks caused by their own choices. Check out their determination to thrive in the Arctic on our program this week.

“Leaving Churchill, Manitoba for the far North, this is Moussa Faddoul our camera man and editor for Listen Up TV.”

“Arriving in Coral Harbour, Nunavut, located on Southampton Island in the northern part of Hudson’s Bay, there will only be four hours of daylight at this season.”

“With our translator Noel Kaludjak. Only 31% of Canadians poll that it is morally ok to wear fur; poll must have been taken in the south, here, fur is a necessity. Thanks to my friend Helena for the loan of this great beaver coat.”

“I admired this tradition of gathering all generations for a regular feast to celebrate, care, pray and dance, it goes on for hours and the warmth here exceeds anything I’ve seen in my city life.”

“Seal, caribou, arctic char, ptarmigan, all shared for the feast and nothing was left over. They set aside a plate for me, I was embarassed I could not eat it, I didn’t even try it.”

“Just as close as two peas in a pod, a couple figures out two microphones are better than one for this party.”

“These people feel deeply loved by God, are devoted to Jesus, and committed to the teachings of the Bible.”

“The best hotel to stay at while discovering Coral Harbour, (Pop. 800) is Leonie’s Place, here’s owner Ron Duffy doing his bookings.”

To change the subject, I actually came onto your site for the first time, to tell you what a great idea I think Extreme Adoption is! Also, the Alpha course program. (We will just have to agree to disagree about the seal issue.)

I have to say, a Canadian poll, is a Canadian poll! See, only 31% of Canadians poll that it is morally ok to wear fur. Lorna, I thought humans are supposed to evolve, and learn and grow. Seems most Canadians are awakened on this issue, that animal cruelty, for the sake of human vanity, is not cool or ethical.

Gee Lorna, I was a real fan of yours until I read above where you were thanking Helena for the loan of the beaver coat! You know, if the people who LIVE up north want to live off the land for themselves, that is one thing, but to think of Canada going into business with China re: fur fashion, using the seals, that is a sure road to the extinction of the species. China has an insatiable appetite. I think the people of Canada should have a vote on this issue, not a few inhumane politicians!

If that was Ms. Shea who got the pie in the face, now I know why. I just saw her and heard what her views are. I share the same sentiment as the pie thrower. It is terrible that Ms. Shea wants to exploit Canada\'s helpless and suffering seals for fashion in China! Shame on her! She was all excited because the Chinese are very interested in this trade. Yes, well they have no conscience in China, just like Ms. Shea. Why doesn\'t she focus on making Canada green!.

I read your article on CBC.ca this morning. Really great you could get your message out through them.
